Last weekend, Sophie, Macca, Esther, Steven, and Tim embarked on a mission in the Garden of England.
The Saturday started with a classical bacon sandwich breakfast at Tim’s, which gave us the energy to begin our 100 km ride. The first 50km turned out to be a rollercoaster. “So viele Höhenmeter” (inclines) ! Some of us enjoyed the challenge, while others fought their way up to Dover Castle and many more hills. However, by lunchtime at a local farm, everyone had a smile on their face, each of us parking our bikes under a cherry tree. After that, energy levels got back to normal, and we flew along the Kentish roads, tempting other cyclists to tail on and and joining the “Radrennen” (race). A drink by the sea rounded off the ride.
After a warm shower, we all gathered at Tim and Kate’s, where they hosted a dinner, accompanied by a wine tasting. Also, we got the chance to wear the brand-new Waldy tops. For those of you who ordered them—you’re going to love them! After such a great evening, everyone slept soundly, with some going to bed at 1 am, and others closer to 5 am.
Sunday brought new challenges, but what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. This time, we skipped the bacon sandwiches but cycled through Ham and Sandwich. We learned an important lesson: Next time Tim says there’s no rain forecast, be sure to wear goggles—battling through "sinnflutartiger Regen" (torrential rain) was a …!
But there was a bright side: swimming in the sea after such a ride almost felt like heaven. We were all “baptised”, and all those sore muscles were soothed.
After another warm shower, followed by a hot cup of tea and a delicious homemade lemon drizzle cake (Tim’s daughter definitely has potential for The Great British Bake Off!), everyone made their way home—some of us singing to the Spice Girls—and each of us with a big smile and more than 160 km logged on Strava.
Super gemacht, everyone! It has been a magnificent weekend, thanks to all of you, and a Herzliches Dankeschön! goes to Kate and Tim for making this an outstanding event in Kent! We are already looking forward to the next adventure.
